FAQs

1. What's it all about?

It's about awesome weekly music lessons! on a Tuesday night from 6pm until 8pm. The idea being that a child/young person and a mum/dad/grandparent/etc come and learn an instrument together, giving vital bonding time, and a shared experience.

Lessons are taught at The Music Box, Edinburgh College, Sighthill Campus

2. When does it run?

Term starts in September and runs until June the following year. We follow the college timetable, which is the same as Edinburgh school holidays.

Bass guitar, Drums, Guitar, Keyboard and Vocals.

4. Do I need to have played an instrument before?

No, we take all levels of student.

5. Do I need to own my own instrument?

No, it's for children/young people and adults, so mums/dads/grandparents/uncles/aunties etc.

7. How much does it cost?

For 2016-2017 our weekly fee is £12 per student. This covers tutor salaries, rent and our other operational costs such as insurance.

8. How old do you need to be?

Ages 7-16 for children and young people. We tried having younger children at Dads Rock Academy, but have found they need to be at least 7 years old to be able to concentrate and focus for the full length of the class.

9. Do you have to like rock music?

No, but it helps! We're here for all musical styles.

10. What happens each week?

Depending on your choice of instrument you will either be in small groups or have one to one lessons with a tutor. You'll have approximately one and three quarter hours' worth of lesson, with a break in-between.

If you have previous experience of playing an instrument we will tailor the lessons to suit your skill level.

We are open to all feedback, so we are happy to work with people to find a teaching style, and level to suit them.

11. Who are the tutors?

The tutors are a mix of experienced musicians from Edinburgh College, but also Edinburgh Napier University.  They are enthusiastic, and really want to help children/young people and their family get the most out of the lessons.

Yes! Initially for the first 2-3 months we will work in individual instrument groups, but as we get closer to the end of the year we will come together and give people experience of playing together.

13. What happens at the end of the year?

We put on the End of Year Show! Ideally all of the Dads Rock Academy students will perform for family and friends. However there is no pressure/expectation to do so.

14. Do I need to practice?

Yes! In order to be a rock star you need to work at it!

15. Can I come for more than one year?

Yes! You can come for as long as you are still enjoying it, and still eligible from an age point of view.
